Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nigritūdō.
Etymology: < classical Latin nigritūdō black, blackish colour < nigri- , alternative stem of niger black (see niger n.1) + -tūdō -tude suffix. Compare Middle French nigritude blackness (1566).
Now archaic.
a. Blackness, esp. of the skin. Also: blackening.
