Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nigr- , niger , -itic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin nigr-, niger black (see niger n.1) + -itic suffix, perhaps after Nigritia, the name of a region in Central Africa (see Nigritian n. and adj.). Compare French Nigritique , adjective (1876), German Nigritier , plural noun (1876). Compare earlier negritic adj.Quot. 1883 at sense A. 1 apparently refers to the earlier formation Nigrotic (after Nilotic adj.):1850 J. L. Krapf Vocab. Six E. Afr. Langs. p. v The Suaheli language..is..the introduction into the Nilo-Hamitic, or Nilotic family of languages, which must be distinguished from the Nigro-Hamitic or Nigrotic stock of languages.
