Etymology: < ancient Greek νομοθέτης a lawgiver, (in plural) at Athens, a committee charged with the revision of the laws < νομο- nomo- comb. form + -θέτης ( < θε- , stem of τιθέναι to put, place (see theme n.) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns). Compare post-classical Latin nomothetes (a1536 in Erasmus). Compare earlier nomothete n.
Chiefly Classical History.
In ancient Greece: a lawgiver; a legislator (now historical). Also in extended use.
