nettle-clothn.

Brit. /ˈnɛtlˌklɒθ/, U.S. /ˈnɛd(ə)lˌklɔθ/, /ˈnɛd(ə)lˌklɑθ/
Forms: see nettle n. and cloth n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: nettle n., cloth n.
Etymology: < nettle n. + cloth n. Compare Dutch neteldoek , German Nesseltuch . In both Dutch and German the compound originally denoted cloth made from nettle-fibres, but by the 18th cent. had come to refer to fabrics manufactured from linen or cotton; Dutch neteldoek now means ‘muslin’ and German Nesseltuch (now usually simply Nessel ) means ‘plain cotton cloth, cambric’. Sense 2 is a re-formation after German.
