Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nicotiane.
Etymology: < Middle French nicotiane (1567 in the source translated in quot. 1577; compare also quot. 1600 at nicotiana n.) < the name of Jean Nicot (1530–1600), French ambassador in Lisbon (1558–60) and lexicographer, who introduced tobacco into France in 1560 + -iane -ian suffix. Compare later nicotiana n.
Now rare.
The tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum; (occasionally) any plant of the genus Nicotiana. Also (literary and poetic): tobacco.In quot. 1932, nicotians could be an error for nicotianas (cf. nicotiana n. (b)).
