单词 nepenthes
释义

nepenthesn.

Brit. /nᵻˈpɛnθiːz/, U.S. /nəˈpɛnθiz/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nēpenthes.
Etymology: < classical Latin nēpenthes a drug supposed to bring relief from sorrow (Pliny) < ancient Greek νηπενθές banishing pain and sorrow ( Odyssey 4. 221, qualifying ϕάρμακον drug), neuter of νηπενθής < νη- not (see ne adv.1) + πένθος grief < the e -grade of the stem of πάσχειν to suffer (see pathetic adj.). Compare French népenthès a plant known to the ancients yielding a drug supposed to bring relief from sorrow (1555 in Middle French; 1765 in specific use in botany), a drug or potion which dissipates sorrow (1752). Compare slightly later nepenthe n., nepenth n.1
1. A drug mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as liberating the mind from grief or trouble. Hence: any drug or potion bringing, or supposed to bring, welcome forgetfulness or relief from pain or anguish (also figurative); = nepenthe n. 1a. Also (occasionally): the plant or herb yielding or supposed to yield such a drug. Now archaic and rare.
