Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin obturation-, obturatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin obturation-, obturatio (Vulgate, also 4th cent. in a text on veterinary medicine; from mid 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin obtūrāt- , past participial stem of obtūrāre obturate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French obturation (1611 in Cotgrave, 1907 of firearms; attested earlier in Middle French as obturacion (c1500)).
The condition of being obstructed or occluded; the action of blocking, stopping, or filling something up; an instance of this; (Firearms and Gunnery) the sealing of the breech of a gun (cf. obturator n. 3b); (Dentistry) the filling of a root canal.
