An English-based pidgin or creole spoken in Melanesia, comprising three main varieties (Tok Pisin in Papua New Guinea, Bislama in Vanuatu, and Pijin in Solomon Islands) and serving as the lingua franca both within and among these communities. Now usually called Melanesian Pidgin (see Melanesian Pidgin n. at Melanesian adj. 2).
