Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cristophine.
Etymology: < French cristophine (1827 or earlier), christophine (1829 or earlier) < the name of the island of Saint Cristophe , Saint Christopher Island (Saint Kitts) to which the plant and its fruit are endemic + -ine -ine suffix4. In β. forms with remodelling of the ending after -ene suffix, which is homophonous with -ine suffix4.
The chayote, Sechium edule; the edible, squash-like fruit of this plant.
