Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: neuro- comb. form, Greek μαστός.
Etymology: < neuro- comb. form + ancient Greek μαστός breast (see masto- comb. form2).
Zoology.
Any of numerous small mechanoreceptive organs in fishes and in larval and aquatic amphibians, typically consisting of a strip of ciliated cells surrounded by supporting cells and forming part of the lateral line system.
