单词 riddel
释义

riddeln.

Brit. /ˈrɪdl/, U.S. /ˈrɪd(ə)l/
Forms:

α. Middle English ridell, Middle English rudel, Middle English rydal, Middle English rydell, Middle English rydelle, Middle English rydill, Middle English rydyl, Middle English (1800s historical) ridel.

β. Middle English riddyll, Middle English ryddell, Middle English ryddill, Middle English (1800s– historical) riddel, 1500s ryddel; N.E.D. (1909) also records a form Middle English ryddyll.

γ. Middle English reddell, Middle English redel, Middle English redeldes (plural, transmission error), Middle English redele, Middle English redell, Middle English redil, Middle English redyll; also Scottish pre-1700 redill.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ridel.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French ridel (French rideau ) curtain (1373 or earlier; earlier currency is probably implied by examples as a vernacular word in a Latin context (see below) and by the post-classical Latin nouns cited below) < rider to pleat (French rider ; late 12th cent. in Old French, earliest in past participle ridé ; probably < the Germanic base of writhe v.) + -el -el suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin ridellus (frequently from c1266 in British sources; also as ridella, ridellum, redella, redellus). It is unclear whether a large number of early occurrences as a vernacular word in a Latin context should be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
