Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nelumbo.
Etymology: < scientific Latin nelumbo (adopted as a specific epithet by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 511, and as a genus name by M. Adanson: see note below) < Sinhala neḷum-, neḷum̆ba ( < earlier unattested neḷun < unattested Sanskrit naḷina lotus), probably via Portuguese nelumbo. Compare French nelumbo (1765; also attested as nélombo (1840)).
Botany.
A genus (family Nelumbonaceae) comprising two species of aquatic plant with solitary flowers, peltate leaves, and thick, edible rhizomes, the red-flowered sacred lotus of Asia, Nelumbo nucifera, and the yellow-flowered American lotus, N. lutea; (also nelumbo) a plant of this genus, esp. a sacred lotus.Valid publication of the genus name: M. Adanson Familles des Plantes (1763) I. 73.
