Etymology: Probably partly (especially in early use) < Middle French annullement, annulement, Middle French, French anullement action of annulling (a law, agreement, etc.) (c1420), depreciation (of the price of a commodity) < anuller annul v. + -ment -ment suffix, and partly < annul v. + -ment suffix. Compare earlier annullation n., annulling n.
