Origin: A borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymons: Ojibwa ni:či:, ni:kka:niss.
Etymology: < Ojibwa ni:či: friend (used between men), vocative of ni:kka:niss my (a man's) male friend. Compare earlier netop n.
Now chiefly Canadian (frequently derogatory).
A North American Indian. Cf. netop n.Formerly also, among North American (esp. Canadian) Indians (without negative connotations): a friend.
