Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poule d'eau.
Etymology: < French poule d'eau water hen (1530 in Middle French as poulle deau ) < poule hen (see pull n.2) + de de prep. + eau water (see ewer n.1).
U.S. regional (southern).
The American coot, Fulica americana.
