Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin patrōnālis.
Etymology: < classical Latin patrōnālis of or belonging to a patron, in post-classical Latin with reference to the patron of a church (c1170, a1564 in British sources) < patrōnus patron n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare French patronal relating to a patron or protector (1611 in Cotgrave; 1732 in fête patronale , with reference to a saint's feast day (compare sense 2)), Spanish patronal (1494), Italian padronale (1673). N.E.D. (1904) also gives the pronunciation for the first syllable (pēit-) /peɪt-/, and gives the following note on the variation: ‘for the pronunciation compare personal ; but some say (pătrōu·năl) /pəˈtrəʊnəl/; cf. doctrinal adj.
