Nasranin.

Brit. /nazˈrɑːni/, /nasˈrɑːni/, U.S. /nɑzˈrɑni/, /nɑsˈrɑni/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Nasranis.
Forms:

α. 1500s Nastraynes (plural), 1600s Nostraines (plural), 1600s Nostranes (plural).

β. 1700s Nusrani, 1800s Nusra'nee, 1800s– Nasrani, 1800s– Nasrany.

Occasionally also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Arabic Nasṭūrī, Nasṭūrīyyūn, Naṣrānī, Naṣārā.
Etymology: In α. forms probably < Arabic Nasṭūrī (plural Nasṭūrīyyūn, Nasāṭira) a Nestorian (see Nestorian n. and adj.1), perhaps either confused by English-speaking travellers with the etymon of the β. forms, or understood by them to refer, among Muslims, to any Christian. In β. forms < Arabic Naṣrānī (plural Naṣārā) (pejorative) a Christian < Syriac nāṣrāyā (see Nazarean n.); use in South Asian contexts represents Malayalam nasrāṇi.
Chiefly among Muslims: a Christian; cf. Nazarene adj. 1. Occasionally also spec.: (a) a Christian living in a predominantly Muslim country; (b) a member of a particular Christian sect or community, esp. one of the ancient Christian communities of South India. In quot. 1612 perhaps meaning ‘a Nestorian’ but confused with Nazarite n. 3a.
