Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Navicula , nāvicula , -oid suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < scientific Latin Navicula, genus name (J. B. G. M. Bory de St Vincent 1827, in Dict. classique d'hist. nat. XI. 472/2; < classical Latin nāvicula : see navicula n.) + -oid suffix. In sense 2 < classical Latin nāvicula + -oid suffix.
Biology.
1. Of, relating to, or resembling a diatom of the genus Navicula, which has bilaterally symmetrical boat-shaped or spindle-shaped cells.
