Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pluvioscope.
Etymology: < French pluvioscope (C. F. Hervé-Mangon 1860, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des. Sci. 51 936; compare quot. 1887, which is taken from an article by the same author) < classical Latin pluvia rain (see pluvial adj. and n.2) + French -o- -o- connective + -scope -scope comb. form.Hervé-Mangon is said to have constructed his pluvioscope in 1850.
