Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin naulum.
Etymology: < classical Latin naulum passage money, fare < ancient Greek ναῦλον (also ναῦλος ) < ναῦς ship (see nave n.2) + -λον, neuter of -λος, suffix forming nouns.
Chiefly literary. Obsolete.
Passage money, fare paid to a ferryman.In quot. 1677: (perhaps) a drink purchased in lieu of a fare.
