Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French méride.
Etymology: < French méride ( E. Perrier Les colonies animales (1881) II. 403) < ancient Greek μέρος part (see mero- comb. form1) + French -ide -id suffix2. N.E.D. (1906) enters this under meris and gives the pronunciation (me·ris) /ˈmɛrɪs/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
In the morphological theory of French zoologist E. Perrier: a group of cells forming a distinct and permanent unit, either living as an independent organism or forming part of a colonial aggregate (see deme n.2 2).
