单词 tittimeg
释义

tittimegn.

Brit. /ˈtɪtᵻmɛɡ/, U.S. /ˈtɪdəˌmɛɡ/
Forms:

α. 1700s tickomegg, 1700s–1800s tickomeg, 1800s ticamang, 1800s– tickameg.

β. 1700s tettymeg, 1700s titimegg, 1700s tittemeg, 1700s tittymeg, 1700s titymagg, 1700s– tittimeg, 1800s tittameg, 1800s tittemag, 1800s–1900s titimeg.

γ. 1700s asticameque, 1800s attihawmeg, 1900s attikimek, 2000s– atikameg.

Etymology: < Cree atihkamēk < atihk-, of uncertain origin and sense (sometimes associated with atihk caribou, by folk etymology) + -amēkw fish. The α. and β. forms show loss of the initial a- within English, perhaps as a result of reanalysis as showing the (English) indefinite article. The β. forms show assimilation of the dental consonants within English. Compare also the following, which apparently shows a form of the Ojibwe word in an English context:a1710 P.-E. Radisson Voy. (1885) 187 A fish that they [sc. the Ojibwe guides] call Assickmack, w[hi]ch signifieth a white fish.
North American. Now rare and chiefly historical.
The lake whitefish of Canada and the northern United States, Coregonus clupeaformis.
