Etymology: < classical Latin mussitātiōn-, mussitātiō subdued noise (2nd cent. a.d. of dogs, in post-classical Latin also of people) < mussitāt- , past participial stem of mussitāre mussitate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French mussitation murmuring (1531). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒsitēi·ʃən) /mʌsɪˈteɪʃən/.
Obsolete.
Muttering, murmuring; a muttered or murmured sound.
