Relating to or designating the more primitive groups of dipteran flies (formerly constituting the suborder Orthorrhapha), which are characterized by the emergence of the adult from the pupa through a longitudinal or T-shaped split. It has been replaced again by the suborder Nematocera and a (reduced) suborder Brachycera.
