Etymology: < scientific Latin Orthorhapha (later Orthorrhapha ), former suborder name (F. Brauer Monographie der Oestriden (1863) 33; < ortho- ortho- comb. form + -rrhapha < ancient Greek ῥαϕή seam, cognate with ῥάπτειν to sew: see -rrhaphy comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare cyclorrhaphous adj. at cyclo- comb. form 1.

Entomology.

Relating to or designating the more primitive groups of dipteran flies (formerly constituting the suborder Orthorrhapha), which are characterized by the emergence of the adult from the pupa through a longitudinal or T-shaped split. Cf. cyclorrhaphous adj. at cyclo- comb. form 1.The suborder Orthorrhapha was erected to include the Nematocera and the ‘lower Brachycera’. It has been replaced again by the suborder Nematocera and a (reduced) suborder Brachycera.
