Originally: the clinical syndrome caused by hypothyroidism, the symptoms of which include mental slowness, muscle weakness, reduced body temperature, hair loss, and a firm oedematous thickening of the skin. Later: spec. the cutaneous manifestations of this syndrome, caused by mucopolysaccharide deposition in the subcutaneous tissue and dermis (sometimes seen also, esp. in the pretibial area, in Graves' disease).
