Etymology: < scientific Latin Myxinidae (A. Günther Catal. Fishes (1870) VIII. 510) < Myxine myxine n. + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare earlier myxinoid n. and adj. Compare also German Myxiniden, plural (1933 or earlier), French Myxinides, plural (1943 or earlier).
