Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: geometry n.

Etymology: < -ometry (in geometry n., etc.); compare -o- connective, -ometer comb. form, and -metry comb. form.Formations of this type are first attested in the 18th cent. (e.g. baculometry n.), but are then rare. The type becomes slightly commoner in the second half of the 19th cent., usually in correlation with nouns in -ometer comb. form, but only becomes frequent after 1900, usually with first elements (sometimes shortened) of English origin, e.g. lichenometry n., stylometry n.

Forming nouns with the sense ‘the action, process, technique, or art of measuring (something specified by the first element’), frequently with correlative formations in -ometer comb. form. Cf. -metry comb. form.
