Primary stress is either attracted to the first syllable of this suffix (see e.g.
ostiolum n.) or to the syllable immediately preceding it (see e.g.
tropaeolum n.). Vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -olum.
Etymology: < classical Latin -olum (in e.g. ostiolum ostiolum n.), neuter singular corresponding to -olus -olus suffix. Compare -ola suffix1.Occurring in nouns borrowed from the 18th cent. onwards from post-classical Latin, e.g. hordeolum n., or formed in scientific Latin, e.g. sporidiolum n.
