Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nache.
Etymology: < Middle French nache buttock (c1275 in Old French; earlier in form nage : see nage n.) < post-classical Latin natica (4th cent. as plural, naticae ; > Italian natica (beginning of the 13th cent.)) < natis buttock (see nates n.). Compare earlier nage n. Compare also aitch-bone n. and natch-bone n.In form ache showing metanalysis (see N n.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (nēitʃ) /neɪtʃ/.
