Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu najīb.
Etymology: < Urdu najīb (noun) gentleman volunteer, (adjective) noble, noble-minded < Persian najīb and its etymon Arabic najīb noble, noble-minded, excellent, outstanding.
South Asian. Now historical.
In India: (an honorary title given to) a gentleman volunteer serving as an infantry soldier under the Marathas, etc., and later to a certain extent under the British. Also as adj.
