Etymology: < scientific Latin periclinium (1819) < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + the stem of κλίνειν to bend, lean (see clino- comb. form) + classical Latin -ium (see -y suffix⁴), after French péricline (see pericline n.).Quots. 1826 and 1832 attribute the coinage of the Latin term to Cassini; however, this has not been traced. Cassini does use French péricline (see pericline n.).
