单词 pericline
释义

periclinen.

Brit. /ˈpɛrᵻklʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈpɛrəˌklaɪn/
Forms: 1800s periclin (in sense 1), 1800s perikline (in sense 1), 1800s– pericline.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: German Periklin ; French péricline ; peri- prefix, -cline comb. form.
Etymology: In sense 1 < German Periklin (A. Breithaupt Vollständige Charakteristik des Mineral-Syst. (1823) 273) < Hellenistic Greek περικλινής sloping all round, on all sides < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + the stem of κλίνειν to bend, lean (see clino- comb. form); in reference to the great inclination between the terminal and lateral faces. In sense 2 < French péricline (H. Cassini 1818, in Dict. des sciences naturelles X. 142; compare periclinium n.) < Hellenistic Greek περικλινής (see above). In sense 3 < peri- prefix + -cline comb. form, after anticline n.
