Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Myrmeleon.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Myrmeleon (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 12, 1767) I. ii. 913), contracted < post-classical Latin myrmecoleon , mirmicoleon (Jerome's edition of the Vetus Latina of Job) < Hellenistic Greek μυρμηκολέων (Septuagint, Job 4:11, where the Masoretic text has Hebrew lāyiš mature or old lion) < ancient Greek μυρμηκο- myrmeco- comb. form + λέων lion n. Compare French myrméléon (1812).
Entomology.
A genus of predatory insects of the family Myrmeleontidae (order Neuroptera), the adults of which resemble dragonflies; (also myrmeleon) an insect of this genus; an ant lion.As used by Linnaeus the genus comprised all the species now placed in various different genera in the family Myrmeleontidae. The habit of constructing conical pits into which ants and other prey fall is particularly associated with the larvae of Myrmeleon formicarius.
