1. Any of various trees of the genus Sorbus (family Rosaceae), typically having pinnate leaves, white flowers, and red berries; esp. S. aucuparia of Europe (also called rowan) and (more fully American mountain ash) S. americana of North America. Also: the wood of any of these trees.
