Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch marsbanker.
Etymology: < Dutch marsbanker (also †masbank ) the horse mackerel or scad ( Trachurus trachurus), also the Atlantic menhaden (see note below); further etymology uncertain. Compare maasbanker n.The forms in English with marsh- are perhaps influenced by marsh n.1; with the form mossybunker compare mossyback n. The name was apparently applied to the menhaden, which appears in schools similar to those of the horse mackerel or scad, by the Dutch of New York; the earliest example of this use (in Dutch) dates from 1661.
