Etymology: Imitative.In sense A. 1 perhaps representing an imitation of the sound of breaking wind. With this sense compare post-classical Latin ptrut , phrut , exclamation of scorn (c1200, c1212 in British sources), Old French ptrout , prout (c1223), and trut int.
