Etymology: Origin unknown. It has been variously suggested that the word might be a loan < English mourner n.¹, French morne sad (see mourn adj.), or Portuguese morna, feminine of morno lukewarm: compare discussion in A. Lyall Black & White make Brown (1938) viii. 102–3.
