Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mormyrus, mormyra.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mormyrus, also mormyra (see quot. 1706) < ancient Greek μορμύρος a kind of sea bream, probably < μορμύρειν (see murmur v.) on account of the sound made by the fish.The form mormylus is after a Hellenistic Greek variant μορμύλος with dissimilation of consonants. Compare classical Latin mormȳr (Pliny) < ancient Greek μορμύρος. Compare also the unassimilated forms mormyrae, mormyri in early modern translations of Pliny and Plutarch:1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World II. xxxii. xi. 452 The painted and streaked Mormyrae.1603 P. Holland tr. Plutarch Morals 972 The iülides, the mormyri also, the sargi, sea-gogeon.
Zoology.
(a) A marine fish with distinctive markings, (probably) the striped sea bream, Lithognathus mormyrus. Obsolete. (b) (In later use) any fish of the genus Mormyrus (family Mormyridae), comprising African freshwater fishes with curved elongate snouts and weak electric organs; an elephant-snout fish; (in form Mormyrus) the genus itself. Cf. mormyrid n. and adj.Valid publication of the specific name in sense (a) (originally in the genus Sparus): Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 281 (citing F. Hasselquist Iter Palæstinum (1757) 335); and in sense b: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 327 (citing F. Hasselquist Iter Palæstinum (1757) 398).
