Etymology: < post-classical Latin mormyrus, also mormyra (see quot. 1706) < ancient Greek μορμύρος a kind of sea bream, probably < μορμύρειν (see murmur v.) on account of the sound made by the fish.The form mormylus is after a Hellenistic Greek variant μορμύλος with dissimilation of consonants.
