Etymology: < classical Latin podagra rheumatic disease of the feet, gout < ancient Greek ποδάγρα foot disease, gout, trap for the feet < ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + ἄγρα hunting, the chase, way of catching, of unknown origin. Compare Middle Dutch podāger , podēgra , podāgre (Dutch podagra ), Middle Low German podāgra , podōgra , podāger , podāgel , pedāgel , Middle High German pōdāgrā (German Podagra ). Compare podagre n.1The usual word in Old English is fōtādl (compare quot. OE).
Medicine.
Originally: pain in the foot, spec. that of gouty arthritis, occurring esp. in the first metatarso-phalangeal joint; †gout as a systemic disorder (obsolete). Later also (chiefly with distinguishing word): an acute arthritis or synovitis affecting the first metatarso-phalangeal joint and mimicking gout.In quot. 1608 personified.
