Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Morgenstern.
Etymology: < German Morgenstern (see morn-star n.), in this sense (16th cent.) after Danish morgenstjerne in similar application, the spikes on the weapon being compared to the rays of the star.In form morgenstiern probably directly after Danish morgenstjerne.
Weaponry. Now historical.
A weapon consisting of a heavy ball set with spikes, either forming the head of a club, as in a mace, or attached by a chain to a handle, as in a flail. Cf. morning star n. 2.
