Etymology: < moon n.¹ + milk n.¹, after German Mondmilch (1704; earlier as monmilch, Gesner 1555) or post-classical Latin lac lunae (Gesner 1555).Compare Mondmilchloch , the name of the Swiss cave in which the deposit is found, and which is also first recorded (as Manloch , Moonloch ) in Gesner in the following passage:1555 K. Gesner Descriptio Montis Fracti 54 In eodem spelunca quędam reperitur uulgó dicta das Manloch, uel potius das Moonloch, id est Spelunca viri uel Lunæ. The first element in the names of the mineral and the cave is probably German Mond moon, perhaps reflecting alchemical association with the silvery aspect of the deposit, although it has also been explained as showing German regional (Swiss) mannli little man, gnome (compare man n.¹).
