Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Oligochaeta.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Oligochaeta, order name (A. E. Grube 1850, in Archiv f. Naturgeschichte 16 i. 275) < oligo- oligo- comb. form + ancient Greek χαίτη mane, taken in sense ‘bristle’ (see chaeta n.), so called from the small number of their bristly parapodia. Compare scientific Latin Oligochaeta, botanical genus name (1843). Compare also French oligochète, noun (1862).
