Etymology: < Middle French prefacion, prefation preface, introductory matter (1396), part of the Catholic liturgy (1503; French †préfation ) and its etymon classical Latin praefātiōn-, praefātiō introductory statement, introductory formula, preface, prologue, in post-classical Latin also preliminary prayer, preface of the mass (3rd cent.) < praefāt- , past participial stem of praefārī to say beforehand or by way of preface, to address with a preliminary prayer ( < prae- pre- prefix + fārī to speak: see fame n.1) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Catalan prefació (1695), Spanish prefacio (1325 as prefaçio ), prefación (1422), Portuguese prefácio (14th cent.), prefação (1549), Italian prefazio (a1306 denoting the preface of the mass), prefazione (1481 as prefatione ).
