Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek μονοδοντ-, μονόδους.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μονοδοντ-, μονόδους (see monodon n.); compare -odont comb. form. Compare French monodonte , noun (1832–4 or earlier) and adjective (1868), Portuguese monodonte , noun (1873). Compare earlier monodontal adj., and also diodont adj. and n., polyodont adj. and n.
Zoology. rare.

= homodont n. Obsolete.The correction of this usage in the later issue of Nature suggests that it was regarded as erroneous, but cf. branch B.
