Among the people of ancient Israel and Middle Eastern and North African Jews: the marriage payment made by a bridegroom either to his bride or to the bride's father, originally intended to be used in purchasing goods for the newly-weds and in securing the future financial independence of the bride. It is, however, doubtful whether this mohar was given in the form of a ransom to the father or of a gift to the bride. 1971 Encycl.
