Etymology: < post-classical Latin monachatus condition or status of a monk (late 6th or early 7th cent.; from early 11th cent. in British sources) < monachus monk n.1 + -atus -ate suffix1. Compare French monachat (1602). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mǫ·nakĕt) /ˈmɒnəkət/.
Obsolete. rare.
A period of a person's life spent as a monk.
