Etymology: < Japanese momme (15th cent.) < mon former unit of length (about 2.64 cm) and currency ( < Middle Chinese) + me eye (used figuratively in the sense ‘weight’, and in the same senses as momme). Compare German Mome, Momi (1779 as Mowe (sic), Momi in printed version of text translated from manuscript in quots. 17271, 17271).Japanese momme was formerly also the name of a small coin weighing one momme, used in the Edo period. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mǫm) /mɒm/.
A Japanese unit of weight equal to 3.75 grams (approx. 0.132 oz). This unit is now considered obsolete or archaic in Japan, except for special traditional purposes, such as weighing natural and cultured pearls (cf. quots. 1988, 1992, 2012).
