Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -trophic comb. form, after German monotroph (1897 in the passage translated in quot. 1900). Compare Hellenistic Greek μονοτροϕεῖν to eat once a day (Strabo).
Biology.
Feeding on one kind of food; spec. (of a parasitic organism) infesting only one host species; feeding on one kind of food; = monoxenous adj. Of a bee: = monotropic adj. 3.
