Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Etymons: French baboul; Hindi babūl.
Etymology: < French baboul (1666) and its etymon Hindi babūl, babūr < Sanskrit babbūla , vavūla , varvūra , etc. (14th cent.), further etymology unknown. With the β. forms perhaps compare Marathi bābhaḷ and Bengali bābul. Compare also Indian Persian babūl ( < Hindi).
Any of several tropical acacias, esp. Acacia nilotica (formerly A. arabica), native to North Africa and parts of Asia, which is used as a source of timber and gum arabic, and in various medicinal preparations; (also) gum, bark, or timber obtained from this tree.
