Etymology: < post-classical Latin Moabita (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek Μωαβίτης (Septuagint) < Μωάβ ( < Hebrew Mō'āḇ Moab, the name of a people in the Old Testament and of the son of Lot (Genesis 19:37) from whom they were descended) + -ιτης -ite suffix1, after Hebrew mō'āḇī . Compare earlier Moabitish adj.With use as noun, compare Old English Moabitare, Moabitingas, both in sense ‘Moabites’, which occur as ethnonyms in, respectively, Genesis A and Paris Psalter. Compare French Moabite (c1230 in Old French as noun, a1379 in Middle French as adjective), German Moabiter, noun (1534 in Luther), Swedish Moabit, noun (mid 16th cent.)
